The Kingdoms of England and Scotland were combined into one monarchy, known as Great Britain, when the Treaty of Union was signed on April 25, 1707. Following talks between the parliaments of the two nations, the treaty created a single, London-based parliament for Great Britain. The union had a tremendous impact on both nations, influencing how they developed politically, economically, and socially in the centuries that followed.
