This Day In History, February 16th 747 AD - Emperor Yang of Sui, the second emperor of the Sui dynasty, was assassinated by his ministers in Jiangdu (present-day Yangzhou, Jiangsu) after a reign of 15 years.

In Chinese history, Emperor Yang of Sui is infamous for his grand construction endeavors, bloody military conflicts, and brutal rule. His defeat of the Chen dynasty and the unification of China are recognized, but he is also remembered for his excessive spending and high taxes, which led to widespread misery and unhappiness among the populace. The Sui dynasty came to an end with his murder, and the Tang dynasty was given the green light to flourish.

1815 AD - Napoleon Bonaparte escaped from the island of Elba in the Mediterranean and landed at Golfe-Juan on the French mainland, beginning his "Hundred Days" rule before being finally defeated at the Battle of Waterloo.

After losing the War of the Sixth Coalition, Napoleon Bonaparte, the former emperor of France, was banished to the island of Elba. With a small band of supporters, he was able to leave the island in February 1815 and make it to Golfe-Juan on the French mainland. Beginning with this occasion, Napoleon tried to retake control of France and establish his reign during the "Hundred Days" era. His ultimate exile and the restoration of the Bourbon monarchy in France followed his defeat at the Battle of Waterloo in June 1815.

1935 AD - Adolf Hitler ordered the Luftwaffe (German air force) to be re-formed, in violation of the Treaty of Versailles.

Adolf Hitler, who had taken office as Germany's Chancellor two years earlier, issued an order on February 26, 1935, to modernize the Luftwaffe, or German Air Force. The Treaty of Versailles, which had restricted Germany's military capabilities after World War I, was obviously broken by this action. The reforming of the Luftwaffe was an important stage in Hitler's military and rearmament program, which he had previously started. As a result of Germany's ongoing military and territorial expansion and the ensuing confrontation with other European countries, World War II finally broke out in 1939.

1993 AD - The World Trade Center bombing occurred in New York City, killing six people and injuring over 1,000 others.

In the World Trade Center's subterranean parking garage in New York City, a truck bomb exploded on February 26, 1993. Six individuals were killed and nearly a thousand others were injured in the explosion, which also significantly damaged the structure. The terrorists who carried out the attack were members of al-Qaeda and were directed by Ramzi Yousef. They intended to bring down both towers in order to create even more devastation. The incident was a serious act of terrorism on American soil even though it did not succeed in its intended purpose. Eight years later, the even deadlier 9/11 attacks were inspired by this attack.
