180 - The Roman Empire declares war on the Parthians.

The Parthian Empire, which was based in modern-day Iran and Iraq, was at war with the Roman Empire in 180. The Parthian War, which lasted from 161 to 166, had been going on for a while, with a number of clashes and battles occurring along the Roman-Parthian border. In 161, the Roman emperor Marcus Aurelius began a significant war against the Parthians, although he eventually fell short of winning by a wide margin. Both sides agreed to a peace accord in 166, bringing the battle to a standstill.

1918 - The execution of the Russian royal family, including Tsar Nicholas II and his family, in Yekaterinburg.

Tsar Nicholas II, the final ruler of Russia, his wife Alexandra, their five children, as well as a number of household employees and relatives, were killed by Bolshevik forces at Yekaterinburg on July 17, 1918. The Soviet Union was founded as a result of the civil war that followed the Russian Revolution and the execution. The Romanov family's bodies were interred in an unmarked tomb, and it wasn't until the 1990s that their bones were found and positively identified using DNA.

1955 - Disneyland, the first ever Disney theme park, opens in Anaheim, California.

The first Disney theme park, Disneyland, debuted in Anaheim, California, on July 17, 1955. Walt Disney created the park with the intention of building a destination where families could enjoy themselves with a sense of enchantment and wonder. Thousands of people lined up to be the first to enjoy the park's attractions and entertainment on opening day, which was a significant event. 1975 - The first joint US-Soviet Apollo-Soyuz Test Project mission launches into space.

The Apollo-Soyuz Test Project (ASTP), the first combined US-Soviet space mission, was launched into orbit on July 17, 1975. The expedition, the outcome of several years of discussions between the US and Soviet administrations, signaled a significant de-escalation of Cold War hostilities. A US Apollo spacecraft and a Soviet Soyuz spacecraft docked in orbit during the trip, and the two crews carried out collaborative experiments and exchanged presents. The mission was successful and paved the basis for further international space exploration collaboration.

2014 - Malaysia Airlines Flight MH17 is shot down over eastern Ukraine, killing all 298 people on board.

All 298 occupants of Malaysia Airlines Flight MH17, a passenger jet traveling from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur on July 17, 2014, were killed when the aircraft was shot down over eastern Ukraine. A surface-to-air missile fired by pro-Russian separatist militants fighting the Ukrainian government was the reason for the accident. The act was strongly denounced by the world community, and an extensive inquiry was carried out by investigators from numerous nations, including the Netherlands. The inquiry revealed that a missile system developed in Russia was responsible for shooting down the aircraft, and numerous persons have been prosecuted in connection with the event.
