March 3rd, 1836: The Republic of Texas Proclaimed Freedom from Mexico.

This Day In History, 2nd: Treaty of Saint Petersburg is Signed.

The Russo-Japanese War ended with the Treaty of Saint Petersburg on March 3, 1875. Japan surprised the Russian Pacific Fleet at Port Arthur in China in February 1904, starting the war, which lasted until September 1905. Saint Petersburg's Winter Palace hosted the treaty's signing. The pact gave Japan the southern part of Sakhalin Island, acknowledged Korea's independence, and paid Japan a substantial indemnity after Japan won the war. The pact laid the groundwork for amicable relations between the two nations.

Grover Cleveland Becomes the First U.S. President to Serve A Non-Consecutive Term, March 3rd, 1887.

Grover Cleveland, the 22nd president of the United States and the first to hold the position for a second non-consecutive term, took office on March 3rd, 1887. Cleveland had previously held office as the 24th President from 1885 to 1889, but he was defeated by Benjamin Harrison in the 1888 election. However, Cleveland won the election once more in 1892 and became the first president in American history to hold office for a non-consecutive period of time. He was in office from 1885 to 1889 as the 22nd president and 1893 to 1897 as the 24th president.

The Reichstag, Germany's Parliament Burns. Why is March 3rd Important?

The Reichstag, Germany's parliament, burned on February 27, 1933. The following week on March 3, 1933, President Paul von Hindenburg declared the act a terrorist attack and authorized Adolf Hitler's government to punish the perpetrators. Some historians believe the Nazis set the fire to enact the Enabling Act on March 23, 1933. Marinus van der Lubbe, a Dutch communist, was implicated. This act allowed Hitler to make laws without Reichstag approval and established a dictatorship in Germany. The Fire and Enabling Act changed German history and led to the Nazi Holocaust.

March 3rd, 1991: Ceasefire is Announced for The Persian Gulf War

The US, UK, and France ended the Persian Gulf War on March 3, 1991. Iraq battled a US-led coalition that included the UK, France, and other nations. After Iraq occupied Kuwait on August 2, 1990, the war began. The coalition's huge air campaign and land invasion quickly defeated the Iraqi army. After Iraq accepted UN Security Council Resolution 660, including the immediate and unconditional evacuation of Iraqi forces from Kuwait, the ceasefire was established. Iraq had to reimburse Kuwait and other Gulf War victims after the ceasefire.
