Roosevelt's fourth time in office, however, was cut short when he died on April 12, 1945, just a few months into his new tenure. His administration is still regarded as one of the most significant in American history.

On November 7th, 1989, David Dinkins was elected the first African American mayor of New York City, becoming the first black mayor of a major U.S. city.
