This Day In History, February 4th: George Washington is chosen by to serve as the first President of the United States in 1789.
On February 4th, 1789, the United States Electoral College overwhelmingly elected George Washington as the first President of the United States. Washington, who was widely respected and admired for his leadership during the American Revolution, received all 69 electoral votes, with each of the 10 states then in the union casting two votes each. On April 30th, 1789, he was inaugurated at New York City, which was the capital at the time. Washington went on to hold the office of President for two terms, from 1789 to 1797, establishing numerous institutions and conventions that still shape American politics today.
February 4th, 1861: The Confederate States of America are founded
Six southern states that had seceded from the United States assembled in Montgomery, Alabama, on February 4th, 1861, to form the Confederate States of America. They ratified a new constitution and chose Jefferson Davis, a former U.S. senator and secretary of war, to serve as the country's first and sole leader. As tensions between the southern and northern states over problems like slavery and states' rights grew, the Confederate government was established as a reaction. This eventually resulted in the start of the American Civil War. The Confederate States of America were still in existence in 1865, when the Civil War came to a close, and they were disbanded and the southern states were once again admitted to the Union.
Superman makes his first debut which is published in 1938.
Detective Comics, Inc. released the first issue of "Action Comics" on February 4th, 1938. (which later became DC Comics). Superman, a fictional character created by writers Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster, makes his debut in this issue. The persona gained popularity fast and is today regarded as one of the most recognizable and lasting superheroes of all time. The popularity of "Action Comics" contributed to the development of the superhero genre in comic books and laid the way for a large number of subsequent superheroes.
The leaders of the Allied powers meet in Crimea for the first Yalta Conference to discuss the state of Europe after World War II.
The Yalta Conference, which brought together the heads of the three main Allied powers during World War II—U.S. President Franklin D. Roosevelt, British Prime Minister Winston Churchill, and Soviet Premier Joseph Stalin—began on February 4th, 1945, in the Crimean resort town of Yalta. The meeting, which covered post-war restructuring of Europe and the world, lasted eight days. The future of Germany and its borders, the creation of the UN, and the Soviet Union's participation in the war against Japan were some of the major topics covered. The Yalta Conference is seen as a turning point in 20th-century history because it influenced how post-war politics and international relations developed.

Mark Zuckerberg, a sophomore at Harvard University, started "Thefacebook" on February 4, 2004, from his dorm room. The website, which was initially intended to serve as a social networking tool for Harvard students, gained popularity very quickly and soon started to be used by people outside of academic institutions. With more than 2 billion monthly active users globally, Facebook is currently one of the biggest and most powerful social media corporations. In the history of social media, the introduction of Facebook is seen as a turning point that profoundly changed how people interact, exchange information, and communicate online.
